International and public activities

VNISI maintains a status of the Russian National Research and Development centre for lighting engineering. The Institute conducts international and public activities, taking part in organizing lighting engineering seminars, conferences, exhibitions, working within Russian and international 2 lighting community organizations.

VNISI has been the basis of the Russian National Committee of the International Commission on Illumination (Russian NC of the CIE) for more than 50 years. The CIE is the oldest international non-profit organization in the field of lighting engineering. Since its inception in 1913, the CIE has become a professional organization in the field of light and lighting and has been accepted as representing the best authority on the subject and as such is recognized by ISO as an international standardization body.
The National Committee of the CIE includes several divisions that perform variously directed activities on:

  • vision and colour
  • physical measurement of light and radiation
  • interior environment and lighting design
  • lighting and signaling for transport
  • exterior lighting and other lighting applications
  • photobiology and photochemistry
  • image technology (visualization).

VNISI is a member of the organizing committee of the INTERLIGHT Moscow exhibition fair and annually organizes the “Rossiiskiy svetodizain” (Russian Lighting design) contest for the best lighting design project. The contest is organized in cooperation with the INTERLIGHT exhibition and the Russian Designers Association. The main objective for this contest is to recognize professionals in the sphere of lighting design and architectural lighting design, and to promote Russian Lighting Design. The president of the Professional Lighting Designers’ Association (PLDA) is traditionally the chairman of the jury for this contest.

VNISI is the informational partner of PLDA, taking an active part in the community of lighting designers of Europe. Thus in 2007 VNISI has elaborated and approved a draft treaty on cooperation between PLDA and CIE. This treaty helped to achieve mutually beneficial cooperation of professional lighting designers and researchers in lighting engineering from around the world.

VNISI is also one of the founders and active participants of the Lighting Trade Association which is a non-governmental organization that proclaimed establishing a civilized competitive market for lighting equipment in Russia as its primary objective.

The LTA regularly holds meetings and panel discussions for its members to discuss the problems and issues of the lighting engineering market in Russia and beyond. Besides, a committee on emergency lighting was recently organized in the framework of the LTA.

VNISI is an active participant in the “Russian light” (Russkiy svet) Association, that conducts an in-depth study of the current state of the lighting engineering field in Russia.

VNISI is the associated member of Lighting Urban Community International (LUCI Association) and the scientific representative of the city of Moscow in this organization.

The Illuminating Engineering Society of Russia and VNISI are a part of several International non-governmental community organizations, such as the Association of lighting societies of the Pacific Region countries – LUX PACIFICA and the Association of lighting societies of Europe - Lux Europa, therefore VNISI and Illuminating Engineering Society of Russia regularly take part in the conferences and events, organized by these associations.
