About us

VNISI – Russian Lighting Research Institute named after S.I. Vavilov is the leading Russian national research center for lighting engineering. This research center specializes in knowledge-intensive problem solving in the fields of theory, methods, technology and standardization of lighting, developing high performance lighting fixtures and illumination devices, developing lighting systems for the national economy, military lighting equipment and space technology.

Starting with its foundation in 1951 VNISI has been conducting basic and applied research, design and engineering works in various areas of lighting engineering. VNISI specialists succeeded in finding lighting solutions for a number of important objects. VNISI specialists together with the lighting industry community carried out a set of works unique in their scale and complexity in providing lighting engineering and maintenance for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, constructing a series of lighting equipment for spaceships, developing low consumption light sources, illuminating equipment, control gear, energy-efficient lighting systems and introducing them into production.

VNISI specialists published a series of monographs on light sources and lighting fixtures, that were translated into foreign languages.

VNISI maintains high scientific and technological potential. There are 2 Àcademicians of the Russian Federation Academy of Electrical Sciences, 4 Doctors of Science, 16 Candidates of science and a team of highly qualified professionally trained specialists on-staff in VNISI.

The Institute has an opportunity to offer postgraduate studies in Lighting engineering to 10 university graduates. Currently 3 students are doing their postgraduate studies in VNISI.

The Federal Agency on Technical Regulation and Metrology has assigned the duties of a technical committee of standardization (332) for lighting equipment to VNISI.
